Feeling lonely and sad? Loneliness is a feeling of sadness when you miss the connection with others during periods of isolation and keeping safe distances.
Everyone feels lonely at times, it is healthy response to the need of sharing time and social interaction. It can have a negative
impact on our physical, mental and emotional health and can lead to many unhealthy ways of coping (e.g. overeating, drinking, smoking, etc)
Research shows that we are healthier and happier when we are close to nature. Gardening, planting, a walk in the forest are ways to relax and increase our mood.
Hugging a tree is another form of connecting to nature, a way to increase levels of the hormone oxytocin. This hormone is produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the pituitary gland in response to hugging, touching, and creates a sense of empathy and trust. It can lower levels of stress and anxiety and is responsible for feeling emotional bonding and positive emotions.
Once you find the perfect tree, wrap your arms around it, hold on tight and don’t let go. Close your eyes and lean your cheek up against the trunk. Feel the wonderful flow of positive energy and relaxation.
