Spiders and Snakes

The fear of spiders (arachnophobia) and Snakes (ophidiophobia) and other creepy things can easily cause discomfort and fear. This is a reasonable response, but there is a difference if this fear becomes intense and irrational, it may be a debilitating phobia and can impact an individual’s life, causing anxieties and intense discomfort.

Spiders: In many people, the fear of spiders elicits a “disgust response. We know many species of spiders are poisonous and bite, therefore, a natural response is to feel fear and avoid the spider. People with severe arachnophobia have such an extreme aversion to spiders that they may be afraid to go into their basement or garage because a spider may be present.

Snakes: Since snakes are often depicted as threatening or dangerous, a fear of snakes is considered a given – who wouldn’t be afraid of something that can kill you with one bite? However, if you find you’re unable to function in your life or that you lose all control at the mere mention of a snake, you may be dealing with more than just the healthy respect a wild predator deserves.

Phobias are mediated by a part of the brain called the amygdala. This part of the brain scans incoming information for areas it deems dangerous, and when it spots one, triggers the fight or flight response.  The fact is human beings can become phobic of anything. All it needs is high anxiety paired with an object. It is just unpleasant and unnecessary, and you can overcome your fear of spiders and snakes with hypnosis
